Back to School Ideas

I am going to share a few things I made that are useful for starting back to school.

Have you read Don't Squeal Unless It's a Big Deal by Jeanie Franz Ransom?  I love this story!  It is a great read aloud for the beginning of the year.  I made a couple activities that can be used after reading the book.

The first activity is a scenario sort.  This is a great whole group activity for reviewing what classifies as a "squeal" and a "big deal".

After the whole group activity, students can assemble this simple pig craft that would look great displayed on a classroom door or bulletin board.  Students can write or draw a picture of an example of a "squeal" and a "big deal".

Next up, I always use this name practice activity at the beginning of every year.

I love this name activity because it practices 3 important skills:
*Name Recognition
*Color Word Recognition
*Letter Recognition

You can purchase the file here.  The file is editable and comes with easy directions that explain how to customize your class list.  This document is great to use year after year.

Teen numbers are usually tricky for Kindergarteners so I created two activities to practice them.  The first is a Color By Code activity.  It practices teen numbers by having students find hidden shapes.

The next activity is a teen number search as well.

The next two activities are just for fun to place in centers for independent practice.  Print the roads and train tracks and then laminate for durability.  These activities come with school buses and trains that have shapes on them.  The student must match the correct shape to the road and then practice "driving" the train or bus on the track or road.

Last up, is the King of "Ing".  I know this is for later in the year, but he was too cute not to share.  Students simply cut and paste the king craft and then practice matching the "ing" words.  He would also look cute on a door or bulletin board.

That's all for now!  I hope you found something useful as you start your new school year!

Write the Room~ freebie included!

Write the Room is a great tool for getting your students up and moving while practicing sight words, spelling words, numbers, etc.

I'm sharing my Back to School file with you that you can try out for free.  The best part is that the text is editable, so you choose which skills get practiced.

To edit the text, simply click inside each box that says "text", backspace and then type your own words.  You can choose your own font and font size.  Print the cards, and then cut along the black lines.

Since the boxes allow editing, these activities are easy to differentiate based on students needs.  While teaching Kindergarten, I've had some students come to school reading and some that do not know any letters.  You can easily adapt these activities to engage all learners.

If you have students that need alphabet practice, type letters onto the cards.
For students that are already reading, you could have them practice sight words.
As the year progresses, if you want to make Write the Room a little more challenging and engaging, type the words small and let the students use magnifying glasses.
