Halloween Centers

This week has been crazy busy.  Monday and Tuesday were Teacher Workdays.  On Tuesday, we had a Parent Conference Day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  I had a really great turn out of parents that came.  I worked on a few Halloween Centers in-between conferences when I had a minute (which wasn't very often).  
Here is a look at a few of the things I made:

The first center is a Write the Room Activity.  There are 12 different words included that can be hidden around the room.  I let my kids use a clipboard, pencil and recording sheet as they walk around searching and recording the words that they find.  I also included a blank candy template if you would like to practice different words than what I have included.




For the next activity, there are 10 bats that have numbers on each wing.  The students choose one bat at a time, and then look at the two numbers on the bat.  Whichever number is the largest, is the one the student records on his/her recording sheet.



Next up, is Mummy's Middles.  Students pick up one mummy at a time, look at the picture on the mummy's belly and decide what sound they hear in the middle of the word.  Once they decide, they record the answer on their sheet.


And lastly, my students have struggled writing numbers in the correct order if they see a set that is scrambled up.  So, I created these pieces of candy corn to have 3 different numbers.  The student has to look at the numbers and then write them in the correct order on their sheet.

More with Nocturnal Animals

I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching to share five activities from my week.  We have been learning about Nocturnal Animals.  I created 2 emergent readers that are nocturnal themed.

The first reader has children practice writing the word "is".


The second reader has children write the word "has" and also count and write how many acorns.


The kids are doing an awesome job learning sight words, however, they are struggling with Math skills.  On Friday, we created spiders and practiced putting numbers in order on their legs.


This is not a great picture, but the kids cut out shapes and glued them together to make a spider.  Then they wrote numbers in order on the spiders legs.  Ex: The spider may have 1, 3, 2, 0 and they would write 0, 1, 2, 3.  They solved 8 of these number order problems.  I let my students use stickers for eyes and a white crayon to draw the mouth and fangs.  They turned out really cute!

Each day we read non-fiction books about nocturnal animals, and then the kids wrote about them.  Here is a look at some of their writing.  Aren't they so great?!

 Owls eat flying squirrels.

 I like flying squirrels.  They jump off of a tree in the night.

I see an opposum.

I like opossums.

Nocturnal Animals

This week we have been learning about Nocturnal Animals.  It has been so much fun.  Here is a look at some of the activities we have been working on.

We have read a lot of non fiction books about nocturnal animals.  This prepared the students to be able to sort animals by whether they were nocturnal or not.

Each morning we review the alphabet together through songs.  After reviewing as a whole group I give them independent work.  This ending sound practice was a cut and paste activity in which the children had to listen to the last sound and then paste the correct letter under the picture.


This week we added "yes" and "no" to the list of words that we know.  The kids answered the question, "Are these animals nocturnal?" by writing "yes" or "no".
The "Foxy Counting" is an activity that I put in station work.  I copied the fox onto construction paper and then added different amounts of stickers to each fox.  The students had to count the stickers and then write the number in the circle and color the fox to match. 


""Owl" Read It" was another station activity.  The students practiced reading and writing sight words and coloring the owls to match.

For the beginning sounds activity, the students had to write the correct beginning letter.

"Skunky Addition" was tricky for most of the kids.  It comes with cut and paste addition sentences that the students must glue under the correct skunk.

"Counting with the Fox" was also tricky.  The students counted and then cut and paste the correct number under the fox.  Although it was a little difficult for them, it was great practice.

For the syllable count, the kids just colored the number of moons to match how many syllables they heard.
 "Animals at Night" was a fun Write the Room activity to practice sight words.
And for this activity, students simply sorted the words as to whether there were 2 or 3 letters in the word.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Yay for Friday!  I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching to share a few things from our week. 

This week we have worked on stories with "three"... The Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Kittens, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Three Silly Girls Grubb, and of course, Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Here are some of the things that we have worked on this week:

We worked on writing the numbers that come next.

We practiced the word "it" by writing it in our emergent readers.  

We built the word "to" with Playdoh and then read our sentence.

We completed a coloring activity in which we had to find the word "to" and "get".

We practiced listening for ending sounds, which was a little challenging.

While reading all of the stories of threes we did a lot of comparing and contrasting with the stories.  We talked about how characters were similar and different.  We picked our favorite character from Goldilocks, and made this cute craft and then wrote about why we liked the character that we picked.

Here are a few examples:

"I like Papa because I like his clothes".

"I like baby because he is little".

 "Goldilock's hair is pretty".

 "Goldilocks is nice".

"I like Papa's shirt".

No one picked poor Mama Bear!
